Standing at 4,562 meters (14,967 feet) above sea level in Arusha National Park, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and the fifth-tallest mountain in Africa. Located just 70 kilometers (43 miles) southwest of Mount Kilimanjaro, this active stratovolcano features dramatic crater walls, ash cones, and diverse ecosystems—making it a world-class trekking destination in its own right as well as the ultimate acclimation climb before tackling Kilimanjaro.
Why Trek Mount Meru?
- Crucial Kilimanjaro Acclimatization: Reaching Meru's summit (Socialist Peak at 4,562m) prepares the human body exceptionally well for high altitude before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro.
- Walking Safari Experience: Because the mountain is located inside Arusha National Park, the lower slopes feature armed park ranger escorts through wildlife territory populated by giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, and elephants.
- Dramatic Volcanic Scenery: Trekking along the narrow knife-edge crater rim offers views of the 1,500-meter sheer crater wall and the inner ash cone.
- Fewer Tourist Crowds: Offers an intimate wilderness experience with significantly lower trail traffic compared to major Kilimanjaro routes.
The Standard Trekking Route (Momella Route)
Mount Meru is climbed exclusively along the Momella Route, usually completed over 3 to 4 days.
- Day 1 (Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut): Hike through lush montane forest and open grassland while spotting wildlife; ascend from 1,500m to 2,514m.
- Day 2 (Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut): Ascend through heather and moorland zones along the crater wall up to Saddle Hut (3,560m). Afternoon optional hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for panoramic views.
- Day 3 (Summit Day to Socialist Peak & Descent): Midnight start along the narrow, rocky crater rim up to Socialist Peak (4,562m) for sunrise views over Mount Kilimanjaro, followed by descent back to Miriakamba or Momella Gate.
Flora & Wildlife Highlights
- Lower Elevation Forest: Home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, bushbucks, leopards, and colorful turacos.
- Alpine Desert Zone: Unique high-altitude plant life including giant lobelias and groundsels along the higher crater slopes.
Best Time to Visit
- Best Weather Window (June to February): Clear skies, lower rainfall, and optimal views across to Kilimanjaro.
- Best Views (December to February): Warmest months with high summit visibility and clear morning skies.
- Rainy Season (March to May): Heavy cloud cover and slippery trails make high-altitude trekking along the crater rim hazardous.
Logistics & Access
- Location: Just 45 minutes to 1 hour drive from Arusha town or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
- Accommodation: Mountain accommodation consists of permanent, well-maintained wooden huts (Miriakamba and Saddle Huts) equipped with bunk beds and dining halls.
